Stopping smoking programme

When you are ready, would you like some help to stop smoking?

It isn’t easy to stop smoking. Nicotine is such an addictive chemical, and the habits and routines are very hard to break. BUT, if you are determined to quit, come along to the pharmacy and we can add Nicotine replacement therapy (patches etc), or perhaps Varenicline (Champix), and a lot of support, advice and tips to your will power, and together we can crack it.

The NHS smoking cessation service is free of charge. No appointment is needed. You will usually see the pharmacist for the first consultation, then, if it is OK with you, either the pharmacist or one of the trained pharmacy staff may see you on the following weeks, provide nicotine replacement products, tell you what your Carbon Monoxide level is, etc.

Sometimes people manage to stop smoking for good at their first attempt, but many people need a few tries. Please don’t hesitate to come back if your first (or seventh) quit attempt wasn’t successful. We have been providing the service for more than 12 years and are proud of the determination and perseverance of our customers – we have successfully helped people to stop smoking who started smoking before we were born!

If you would like to discuss stopping smoking the pharmacist would be delighted to see you – no appointment is required.

If patches, gum or any other type of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is right for you this will be prescribed by the pharmacist on the NHS.

Contraception

In an ideal world you would plan which effective method of contraception to use before it is required, and condoms would never fail.

Unfortunately, in the real world, emergency contraception is sometimes needed.

Emergency contraception (also known as “the morning after pill”) is available from the pharmacist free of charge, confidentially*. It is more effective it is taken as soon as possible, but is effective if taken up to 72 hours (three days) after unprotected sex.

Information and advice (in a no-nagging, no-lecturing style) about effective contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, supply of free condoms, making appointments for you with a GP, etc are also provided.

Brand leader and “value” pregnancy tests are available. The pharmacist and the private consultation room are always available. There may be just a few minutes wait if the pharmacy is busy.

***The pharmacist will explain to you that everything you discuss will be confidential UNLESS the pharmacist is worried about your safety, in which case they have a legal obligation to tell someone.

Free Condoms

Free condoms are available from the pharmacy. Help yourself to a bag of condoms that are located discretely by the corner seat in the pharmacy near the razor blades. They are also available from the consultation room.
